           QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
           the cylindrical body raised on three low bracketed feet, one   題識:
           side boldly carved with branches of large blossoming peony
                                                     戊午秋八月之中浣書,夢山居士製。
           flowers with two small hovering butterflies, the other side
           carved with a long inscription signed Mengshan Jushi zhi, dated   光緒乙巳仲秋樊放叄識。
           to the wuwu year, corresponding to probably 1738 or 1798,

           A closely related bamboo brushpot by Deng Wei, signed
           Yunqiao and dated 1780, similarly decorated with deep carving
           in a sunken ground, with identical touches including the
           butterfly, is illustrated by Wang Shixiang and Wan-go Weng,                             Marks
           Bamboo Carving of China, China Institute in America, New
           York, 1983, p. 124, pl. 67.
