             The theme of Buddhist lions was popular since the Ming                                                                   The present lot takes its inspiration from earlier period
             dynasty. The depiction of a Buddhist lion and a young cub                                                                carvings of animals. See a related example dated to the Six
             forms the pun taishi shaoshi, which translates as 'May you                                                               Dynasties, illustrated in Robert Fisher, Magic, Art and Order:
             and your descendant achieve high rank'. It is rare to find                                                               Jade in Chinese Culture, Plam Springs, 1990, pl. 27. For
             the depiction of a lioness with her two cubs as seen on the                                                              related Ming dynasty examples, see Jenny So, Chung Wah-
             present lot. See a similar jade lion group also carved as a                                                              pui and Carol Michaelson, Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong,
             recumbent lioness and her two cubs sold in these rooms, 4th                                                              1996, cat. no. 148. While this piece draws on Ming examples,
             October 2011, lot 2141.                                                                                                  in its carving style and decorative appearance, it illustrates
                                                                                                                                      the archaism much favoured by early Qing rulers, especially
                                                                                                                                      the Qianlong Emperor.
