     A POLYCHROME LACQUERED BRONZE
     ‘SHOULAO AND DEER’ CENSER

     LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY

     The deer is gracefully modelled with its head turning towards
     Shoulao seated sideways and forming the cover. The immortal is
     cast with eyes downcast in a benevolent expression and holding
     a ruyi in his left hand, with his robe decorated with flowerheads
     picked out in lacquer of various colours, and a spade-shaped
     aperture on his back.
