PROVENANCE
Yangdetang Collection, acquired in London in 1980s
The present meiping belongs to a group of large blue and white
meiping and jars of the 15th century, decorated with mythical and
auspicious animals such as qilin and peacock. 15th century blue and
white meiping decorated with qilin motif is extremely rare. A similar
meiping in the Liaoning Provincial Museum was discussed by Geng
Baochang, Mingqing ciqi jianding (Authentication of Ming and Qing
Porcelains), Beijing, 1993, p. 74. Compare also with a jar decorated
with peacock and qilin illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, Shogakukan,
1976, vol. 14, pl. 48-49.
