A FINELY CARVED LARGE WHITE JADE ‘HEHE
ERXIAN’ GROUP
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The group is carved in the round as a large open lotus leaf supporting
the two smiling twins, Hehe Erxian, one holding a lotus stem while
the other holding a box with a three-legged toad clambering up his
left shoulder. The white stone has a pale celadon tone and russet
highlights on areas of the leaf.
8 in. (20.3 cm.) wide, box
HK$8,000,000-12,000,000 US$1,100,000-1,600,000
White jade groups such as the present example became popular during
the Qianlong period in response to an increased supply of good quality
material that came with the conquest of Xinjiang. The subject matter of
Hehe Erxian, however, is extremely rare on large-sized carvings and is
more common on pendants and plaques. For jade groups of comparable
size, see a jade horse group and a jade carving of qilin in the Palace
Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Jadeware (III), The Complete Collection of
Treasures of the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1995, p. 109, no. 89, p. 114, no.
94, respectively.
