Rectangular, decorated in polychrome and gilt, with lobed arch
surrounded by Nasrid-style decoration and inscriptions, labelled “No.
52, Enrique Linares Es Propriedad” to lower edge, a black and white
photo of a mother and child behind.

After Antoine-Ignace Melling (French, 1763-1831)
From his ‘Voyage Pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du
Bosphore Paris’, circa 1809-1819. (2).

Melling travelled throughout the Levant and stayed for several 125
years in Constantinople. While there he met the sister of the Sultan,
Sultane Hadidge, who in 1795 appointed him as architect in charge
of renovating her palace at Ortakoy. As a result Melling was able to
prepare the original drawings for this series of prints, which achieved
great popularity in France. For the complete set of 52 engravings, see

The Bijai Mandal is part of the ruins of Jahanpahah, the fourth city built
on the site of what became Delhi, built by Muhammad bin Tughluq
(reg. 1325-51). The other buildings seen in the background to the
left may be the Khirki Mosque, the Dargh of Chiragh and the tomb of 125
Bahlul Lodi.
