A TIANHUANG ‘HORSE’ SEAL MADE FOR CHEN BAOSHEN
SIGNED JIN BEILOU, REPUBLIC PERIOD
The rectangular seal is surmounted by a finial in the form of a recumbent horse, incised on
the frontal side with an inscription reading ‘Made by Beilou in the Capital’. The seal face
is carved with three characters Huandu Lou.

Beilou is the studio name of Jin Shaocheng (1878-1926), a renowned literati from Zhejiang
active during the late Qing to early Republic period, well respected for his talents in calligraphy,
paintings and seal carvings. Huandu Lou is the name of a private library in Luozhou, Fujian,
owned by the late Qing statesman and scholar Chen Baoshen (1848-1935).

金北樓（1878-1926） ，名金紹城，字鞏伯，號北樓，浙江吳興人，博學多才，書畫篆刻金石六
藝無所不精。山水承繼馬、夏，人物楷模唐、仇，花卉擅襲惲南田之沒骨畫法。著名收藏家王世
襄的舅舅，清末民初北方畫壇之領袖。
陳寶琛（1848-1935年），字伯潛，號弢庵、陶庵、聽水老人。福建螺洲人。晚清大臣，學者，
官至正紅旗漢軍副都統、內閣弼德院顧問大臣，為宣統皇帝授讀。直言敢諫，與張之洞、張佩
綸、寶廷同稱「樞廷四諫官」。於螺洲鎮築有著名的「陳氏五樓」，包括「賜書樓」、「還讀
樓」、「滄趣樓」、「北望樓」和「晞樓」。 其中「還讀樓」收藏了大量民間善本、珍本，是當
時福州地區最大的私人藏書樓。
