24.  Dish.  Chinese  (Scottish market),  ca.  I735-40.   Hard   This  beautifully  drawn  flower  basket  derivesfrom  an untraced  engraving  after
          paste.  Diam.  I5  I4  in.  (38.7  cm).  Helena Woolworth   Jean Baptiste  Monnoyer  (1634-I699)-one   of  his  many  variant  compositions  that
          McCann  Collection, Purchase,  Winfield  Foundation   werefreely  adapted  to a wide range of  media  long after  his death. The dish is one

          Gift, I962 (62.187.1)                         of  two in the  Metropolitan,  and a third  is in the  Peabody  Essex  Museum,  Salem,
                                                        Massachusetts;  originally  there  was  probably  a set  offour  or,  at most,  six. The
                                                        placement  of  the  basket on a  gold ground  may  have  originated  with the Chinese
                                                                                                             with
                                                        painter  but,  alternatively,  could  have been  inspired  by Westernfamiliarity
                                                        Yongzheng  export  porcelains richlypatterned  gold,  silver,  and black.
