Birds have been a continuously popular subject matter for jade carving in
China from Neolithic times. In the crispness of its carving and the attractive
combination of white stone with russet highlights, the present carving can
be compared to other 18th century jade bird carvings. See, for example, a
carving of a bird with a fruiting branch, and with an incised Qianlong mark,
included in the exhibition 5,000 Years of Chinese Jade, San Antonio Museum
of Art, 1 October 2011-19 February 2012, and illustrated in the Catalogue,
p. 122, no. 85.
