REPOUSSÉ-MOUNTED AND
TURQUOISE-EMBELLISHED BURLWOOD
‘ANIMAL ROUNDEL’ OFFERING BOWLS
Tibet, 19th century or later
Each burlwood bowl supported on a short
stem foot and rising to an everted rim, the
interior lined with sheet silver extending over
the rim, the well applied with a turquoise bead
set in a gilt-copper mount, the lower body
and foot mounted with silver sheet worked
in repoussé and chased details, the principal
features picked out in gilt, including one bowl
with two dragons and a lotus parasol at the
base and a band of bajixiang and floral scroll
at the lower body, one with a rooster at the
base and a band of roosters and lotus at the
lower body, one with ‘twin fish’ at the base
and a band of sheep and lotus at the lower
body, one with a monkey at the base and a
band of monkeys and flowers at the lower
body, one with a Garuda at the base and a
band of mythical animals and lotus at the
lower body, and one with a lion at the base
and lotus scroll at the lower body.
