A LARGE REPOUSSÉ SILVER AND COPPER-ALLOY COVERED
RITUAL TEAPOT
Tibet, 19th century or later
The generously proportioned globular silver body set with copper-alloy
features, including a flared foot wrapped in repoussé petals, a handle
in the form of a dragon with protruding eyes, whiskers and tusks
issuing from the snout, and a scaled body terminating in a curled tail,
the spout emerging from the head of a makara, the shoulder with a
repoussé scroll band beneath an openwork ‘scrolling lotus’ neck, the
domed silver cover mounted with a copper-alloy repoussé roundel in
the form of a flowerhead beneath a bud-form finial.
17in (43.2cm) width over handle
$5,000 - 7,000
Teapots of this type were traditionally used during special occasions
such as weddings. Handles in the form of dragons and spouts issuing
from the mouths of makaras commonly appear with stylistic variations
across the Tibetan region. Compare a similar teapot sold at Bonham’s,
New York, 11 September 2012, lot 154.
