A RED AND WHITE DOUBLE-OVERLAY BLUE GLASS ‘CRANES’
SNUFF BOTTLE
Yangzhou School, 1830-1890
Exquisitely carved in relief on both sides with cranes grasping lingzhi
fungus beneath the red sun, a brilliant example of the multiple-
overlay technique of the Yangzhou school, with a rare dynamic colour
combination, conveying a blessing of ‘promotion in official ranking’,
tourmaline stopper, box,

十九世紀 寳石藍地套涅白朱紅料「指日高升」鼻煙壺
A related example depicting dragons together with carp is in the Baur
Collection in Geneva (Collections Baur 17 [1973]). See another red and
white double-overlay blue glass ‘dragons’ snuff bottle, which was sold
at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 25 May 2014, lot 1027.
