The deep rounded bowl flanked by a pair
of mythical beast handles, with a wide brim
and a stepped inverted rim, supported on
an openwork lotus stem raised on four
Buddhist lions set on a circular stepped disc,
surmounted with a domed stepped silver and
jade cover with a compressed globular finial
decorated in relief with six chi-dragons below
the jade bead finial, variously decorated with
foliate lotus sprays.

Set on a domed lotus base with bulbous mid
section incised with flowerheads, the flaring
cup with bands of petals and shaped panels
containing the auspicious symbols of the
chakravartin.

The butter lamp, also called ‘The Dharma
Light’, is an essential ritual item in Tibetan
Buddhism facilitating the offering of light to
enlightened beings. The lamp would have
been prominently displayed beside a temple
altar and kept burning as a perpetual flame,
tended by monks.
