Likely representing the dominant deity of
the period, the head of Vishnu is carved in
fine sandstone. The style of Angkor Wat is a
marked departure from the Baphuon period
that favoured elongated feminine tropes,
instead a return to the power of the earlier
styles of the Koh Ker tradition of the tenth
century.

A SANDSTONE HEAD OF A FEMALE DEITY
Cambodia, Baphuon style, 11th century
Superbly carved in a very fine sandstone. The
jatamukuta consists of alternating and inverted
braids rising over the bun secured by a raised
ring that flattens at the back. Her serene
expression over the slightly elongated face is
amplified by wide eyes with lids defined by
a double line, short broad nose and sensual
mouth, stand.
