PAIRE DE CROCHETS DE PALANQUIN EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE
Cambodge, style d’Angkor Vat, XIIe siècle
A PAIR OF COPPER ALLOY PALANQUIN FINIALS
Cambodia, Angkor Wat style, 12th century
The present example is unusual with the relatively simple stepped
cylindrical collar with chased stylised motifs supports a waisted square
sectional element with floral and zoomorphic figures over a broad hook
with a three-headed naga terminal, stands.
           22cm (8 5/8in) high. (4).

           €4,000 - 6,000

           Provenance:
           Christie’s Paris, 15 December 2010, lot 368
Jean-Pierre Rousset, Paris (1936-2021), acquired at the above sale
At the height of the Khmer Empire (802–1437 CE), royalty and
aristocracy travelled in handheld carriages, or palanquins. The seat of
a palanquin was slung from ropes attached to hooks like this. Hooks
were used to support a bronze ring from which hung a seat, like a
hammock or swing. A wooden pole would have passed through the
hollow collar at the top and was carried on the shoulders of bearers.

EXTRÉMITÉ DE PALANQUIN EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE DORÉ À
           DÉCOR DE NAGA
Cambodge, époque angkorienne, fin du XIIe/début du XIIIe siècle
A GILT COPPER ALLOY NAGA PALANQUIN FINIAL
Cambodia, Angkor Period, late 12th/early 13th century
Projecting from a long moulded socket the three naga heads present a
unified ovoid panel surrounded by a ring of flames.
           12.5cm (4 7/7in) high.
           €3,000 - 5,000

           Provenance:
Robert Rousset, Paris (1901-1981), acquired in the 1950’s-1970’s
           Jean-Pierre Rousset, Paris (1936-2021)
Preserved with the original gilding this fine casting of a naga final
would have adorned processional royal palanquins where the finials
were mounted on the ends of the poles and corners of the elevated
platforms. The meticulous details of the nagas scales are repeated
at the back in this unusual fine example. Compare with a closely
related example of similar quality held in the Cleveland Museum of Art
           (1987.14.1).
