Les cimiers de ce type connus sous le nom d’adoné sont une création
caractéristique du peuple Kurumba vivant au nord de l’actuel Burkina
Faso. Ils apparaissaient lors des évènements majeurs associés aux
rites funéraires et à la commémoration des ancêtres et des esprits,
et de l’antilope ayant sauvé la vie de l’ancêtre fondateur, vénérée
par la majorité des clans Kurumba. Ils auraient également pu être
utilisés comme autels portatifs pour commémorer un ancêtre précis.
Les motifs peints sur la sculpture pourraient être liés à des concepts
cosmologiques ou à des légendes sur l’origine du clan.
Pour deux exemplaires de même typologie respectivement conservés
au Musée du Quai Branly (autrefois au Musée de l’Homme Paris) et au
Metropolitan Museum de New-York, Cf: C.D.Roy, Art of the upper volta

KURUMBA HEADDRESS
Burkina Faso
This type of headdress, known as adone, is a characteristic creation
of the Kurumba people living in the north of present-day Burkina
Faso. They appeared at major events associated with funeral
rites and the commemoration of ancestors and spirits, and of the
antelope that saved the life of the founding ancestor, revered by most
Kurumba clans. They could also have been used as portable altars
to commemorate a specific ancestor. The painted designs on the
sculpture could be related to cosmological concepts or legends about
the origin of the clan. For two examples of the same type respectively
kept at the Musée du Quai Branly (formerly at the Musée de l’Homme
in Paris) and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. See C.D.Roy, Art 366

Belle partie supérieure d’un cimier adoné représentant une
antilope mythique et symbolique. Cet objet est identifiable sur une
photographie prise dans l’appartement parisien de Robert Rousset
dans les années cinquante.
