Ce type de masque baoulé présentant une
coiffure en crête semble caractéristique des
deux masques kpan apparaissant lors des
danses du Goli qui peuvent être exécutées
aussi bien comme réjouissance villageoise que
lors de funérailles d’un personnage important
de la communauté. Les deux kpan seraient
la dernière des quatre paires de masques
différents à apparaître en fin de journée,
l’homme précédant la femme, et ce moment
constituerait le point d’orge des danses.
Les masques kpan sont relativement rares
au sein du corpus de l’art baoulé, et hors
contexte, rien dans le classique traitement
idéalisé de la beauté baoulé ne permettrait de
différencier le masque masculin du féminin.

This type of Baule mask with a crested
headdress seems to be characteristic of the
two kpan masks that appear during the Goli
dances, which can be performed both as a
village celebration and at the funeral of an
important person in the community. The two
kpan would be the last of the four different
pairs of masks to appear at the end of the
day, with the man preceding the woman, and
this moment would constitute the high point of
the dances.
Kpan masks are relatively rare in the corpus of
Baule art, and out of context, there is nothing
in the classic idealised treatment of Baule
beauty to differentiate the male mask from the
