           DOUBLE-SIDED PANELS
           Kangxi
           One carved with Shoulao, the God of
           Longevity, with a deer and crane, and
           the other with a further Immortal with two
           attendants, both on grassy hillsides within
           stylised chilong borders, each reverse side
           decorated with planters and jardinières of
           ornamental rockwork and flowering plants,
           detailed in colours and gilt, set within
           hardwood frames.                629 (two views)

           female attendant beneath a paulownia tree,

           an upright angular handle, the cover signed
           Wan gu zhai ‘Studio of Enjoying Antiquity’ and
           with one seal.

           Jean-Augustin Bussière, the owner of the
           magnificent Bussiere Gardens, Beijing, went
           to Beijing in 1913 and practiced medicine
           there for 41 years. His aim was to purchase
           medical equipment from France and introduce
           advanced medical experience to China. He
           built a watchtower in his own villa Bussiere   631
           Garden as a place for local people to rest. His
           patients were of varied professions and social
           classes.
