A GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF
SUDHANA
17th century
Elegantly modelled standing looking slightly to
the left and holding an ingot in his left hand,
the finely-incised hair drawn up into a topknot,
the face lacquered deep red and with a
cheerful expression, clad in layered robes tied
at the waist, the outer robe painted in gold
on a red ground with flowers and waves, and
bearing carved decoration including square
badges to the front and back with pairs of
long-tailed birds in flight amid clouds and
blossoms, classic scrolls to the hems, and a
geometric pattern around the neck, all in blue,
gold and red. 40cm (15 3/4in) high.

The jovial twins modelled in mirror image,
seated on large wicker boxes and covers,
each holding a bat in one hand and pointing
with the other, wearing aprons with floral
motifs, the hair pulled into pig tails to each
side of the head.
