15th/16th century
Finely decorated with a cusped central panel depicting a lady seated
holding a lute in a landscape of pine, willow, bamboo and rockwork,
on a ground of floral panels and geometric designs, the box with
bracket-rimmed foot. 25.5cm (10 1/8in) long. (2).

A LARGE MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID BLACK LACQUER TWO-
TIERED PICNIC BOX AND COVER
Probably Ryukyu Islands, 19th century
Elaborately inlaid on the flat top of the high domed cover with a design
of stylised dense leafy flowering lotus heads in profile, the design
repeated in five continuous bands around the sides, the stepped
spreading foot with two narrower lotus-scroll bands, the interior entirely
covered in glossy tomato-red lacquer. 41.5cm (16 3/8in) high. (3).
