1672年 德化白釉詩文筆筒
The inscription around the exterior of the brushpot 391
notes the last three lines from Su Shi's poetic essay:
何夜無月?何處無竹柏影?但少閒人如吾兩人耳。
壬子夏林顏製
How many nights is the moon absent? How many
places lack the shadows of bamboo and cypress?
Yet, minds as leisurely as ours are rare.
Made in the summer of the renzi year by Lin Yan
According to Su Shi, one night in 1083, he was
unable to sleep, so took a walk to Chengtian
temple to find his friend Zhang Huaimin who also
was awake. They thus took a walk together in the
courtyard. The short essay captures the essence of
friendship, so valued by the literati.
A similar Dehua brushpot inscribed with the same
poetry lines and date from the Marsh Collection
sold in our London rooms, 2 November 2023, lot
13. Both brushpots exhibit distinct impressions on
their interior walls, revealing the process of their
manufacture on a pottery wheel.
