A MUTED GRAY AND RIVER-BROWN JADE 'FLOWERING
PRUNUS' BOTTLE
1760-1850
Of oval cylindrical outline depicting a tree stump with gnarly knots
and a branch of budding and flowering prunus or possibly depicting a
prunus branch over eddies in a flowing stream beneath, a small notch
at the center of the blossoms, carved as a small knot or more possibly
as a crescent moon, the top and base of the bottle with swirling knot
or wave-like coils, the top wih a small cylindrical hole and a well-
hollowed interior.

A fascinating jade carving with two possible readings of the overall
design. While it seems most likely that the vessel is a stylized knotted
tree stump, the large knots to the trunk may also depict large swirling
eddies in a fast-flowing stream. Similarly, a very small deeply carved
'knot' amidst the blossom may also represent a crescent moon (a
classic Chinese subject).
