A BRONZE MIRROR AND A GROUP OF THREE
EARLY BRONZE FITTINGS
Eastern Zhou - Tang Dyansty
The bronze mirror cast with two romping beasts
under a central knob enclosed by sawtooth and
beaded flanking a long inscription, Sui/Tang
Dynasty; a pair of mask-and-ring handles intricately
modeled with in high relief with taotie masks
suspending single rings cast with interlocking
C-commas and volutes, Han Dynasty; a narrow
bronze fitting of rectangular shape, the central
U-shape extension cast with a taotie mask under
paired slender chilong panels enclosed by leiwen,
the underside cast with four brackets and a hook for
attachment, Eastern Zhou Dynasty/Warring States
period. (4)

The inscription on the bronze mirror may be read as:
玉匣聊開鏡 輕灰拭故塵 光如一片水 影似兩邊人 吉
Bronze mirrors with the same poem but slightly
different wording exist in various designs. Compare,
for example, a bronze mirror decorated with ginkgo
leaves design encircled by this poem, in the Palace
Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Reflections of the
Emperor: The Collection and Culture of Mirrors at
the Qing Court, Taipei, 2015, pp.80-81, no.I-29,
described as Sui-early Tang dynasty.

A GROUP OF EARLY BRONZE FITTINGS
Eastern Zhou - Han Dynasty
The first, an elegant silver inlaid fitting in the form of
an animal head, the shaft pierced for attachment;
two cast bronze tubular bracket ornaments with
pierced chilong-panel extensions; two tubular
ornaments with lacking extensions but with
matching decoration; and a large hollow bracket
fitting cast with an abstract taotie panel under
triangular stiff leaves. (6)
