AN ARCHAIC BRONZE TRIPOD VESSEL AND COVER, DING
Eastern Zhou Dynasty
The spherical body supported by three cabriole feet, decorated with
a continuous 'serpent' decoration at the waist, interrupted by a pair
of square upturned handles, the domed cover similarly decorated in
concentric bands encircling a cast taotie mask with loose ring, the
top of the cover with three recumbent buffalos which become the feet
when reversing the cover, a line of inscription delicately carved in zhuan
script below the raised ridge on the vessel, covered inside and out
malachite and earth encrustations.
