A WOOD SCULPTURE OF A SCHOLAR’S ROCK
QING DYNASTY(1644-1911)
The sculpture is cleverly worked utilising the natural formations of
the wood in imitation of a scholar’s rock. It rises from a small narrow
base expanding to include a winged projection at midsection, and
constricting to a pointed top set on a diagonal. There are several small
hollows throughout the surface and a central perforation resembling
grottoes and cave dwellings. A fine network of jagged protrusions and
deep pitting textures the uneven surface with a soft patina.
23º in. (59 cm.) high, wood stand
