A THANGKA OF A LAMA AND A THANGKA OF MAGZOR Provenance
GYALMO The Oliver Robert Coales Collection, according to his written records
Eastern Tibet, 19th century and later acquired by Mr Coales when working and travelling in Eastern Tibet
The first, finely painted with gilt outline, depicting a lama in a yellow in 1916-17, and thence by descent.
pandita hat, clad in monastic robes and seated in lalitasana on a
formal throne, stretching a beaded meditation belt in his hands, Each thangka comes with a paper note in Tibetan and English,
flanked by Vajrapani and Tara, with Tsongkhapa Manjushri and probably written by local monks for the benefit of Mr. Coales, with
Shadakshari Lokeshvara in a row above, and Jambhala, Magzorma cartouches enclosing Tibetan writing identifying the iconography of
and Panden Lhamo at the bottom pf the painting, all set against a the thangka.
black ground landscape, captioned to the reverse, together with a
hand-written note in Tibetan and English illustrating the iconography,
24cm (9 1/2in) x 17cm 6 5/8in); the second depicting Magzor
Gyalmo, blue-black and wrathful, wearing a tiara with a lion ornament
on the right ear and a snake one to the left in accordance to Gelug
tradition, the deity flanked by her two attendants, Makaramukha
and Simhamukha, the thangka accompanied by a hand-written note
identifying the iconography, 30.5cm (12in) x 22.5cm (8 7/8in).
