                                                             A THANGKA OF AMITABHA IN THE PURELAND OF SUKHAVATI
                                                             Tibet, 19th century
                                                             Seated in the vajra position under a tree canopy adorned with
                                                             ribbons, beside celestial deities showering down precious gifts and
                                                             Happy Omens, the Buddha Amitabha, red in colour and depicted
                                                             in Buddha Appearance, teaching to his Eight Heart Sons, the Eight
                                                             Great Bodhisattvas, in front of a muddy pond issuing giant white
                                                             lotuses supporting small figures, with the scene replicated in the
                                                             foreground with a seated Amitayus in Bodhisattva form teaching to
                                                             a number of acolytes in front of a square muddy pond issuing lotus
                                                             blooms and a further pond with Happy Omens floating in the dark
                                                             waters. 89cm (35in) x 63.5cm (25in)
