           Tibet, 19th century
           Wearing a red Pandita hat, with a curly moustache and goatee,
           the teacher seated on a square throne under a fruit tree before a
           standing attendant carrying a book and an Indian adept seated on
           the ground, with Manjushri floating on a cloud above, two tigers by
           the river in front of the throne.

           A THANGKA OF FIVE ARHATS
           Tibet, 18th century
           Distemper on cloth; the five Elders each with standing attendant
           seated in a forest, the first, either Ajita, Chudapantaka or
           Kanakabharadvaja, with his hands in the meditation pose, above
           seated Nagasena with staff and alms bowl, Pantaka holding a
           book and practising the dharma at the bottom right before two
           leopards, Pindola with book and alms bowl at the centre and Rahula,
           Shakyamuni’s son, at the top left holding a bejewelled tiara, a gift
           from the gods of the Heaven of the Thirty-three, all under a figure of
           Padmasambhava up above.

           The Sixteen Great Arhats are generally painted as part of a set,
           either as single figures or in groups of two to five figures. The full
           group would include the Buddha Shakyamuni, the sixteen Arhats,
           the attendant Dharmatala, the patron Hva-shang and the Four
           Guardians of the Directions - Vaishravana, Virupaksha, Dritarashtra
           and Virudhaka.

           A MANDALA OF A DAKINI
           19th/20th century
           Set within an upside-down triangle within a six-pointed star, the
           female deity naked, red in colour, dancing on a river of blood whilst
           holding a vajra and a skull cup, surrounded by further dakinis and
           couples in yab-yum, all within the square palace circled by a row
           of lotus petals, vajra, flames and charnel grounds, with the five
           Buddhas, with central Akshobya at the top of the painting, above a
           row of five multi-armed female deities and two dakinis, with further
           five multi-armed meditational deities, two protectors and two further
           dakinis at the bottom of the painting, all mounted in silk.
