FIVE WOOD FIGURE NETSUKE, A PIPE
CASE AND PIPE
Edo Period, 19th century
The first a man looking to the right with
pursed lips, imitating Tekkai Sennin, a
double gourd slung on his back, unsigned;
the second an old man standing, holding
a staff, unsigned; the third a woodsman
bent beneath the weight of two bundles of
brushwood on his back, signed illegibly;
the fourth an oni (demon), seated, washing
clothes in shallow tub, unsigned; the fifth
of two Yamabushi priests, one standing, a
large oi (travelling pack) on his back, while 506
the other sits on the ground at his back,
signed Ikko; the senryu-zutsu pipecase in
the form of Daruma stretching and standing
on a drum, unsigned; containing a bamboo
and gilt metal pipe. The largest: 20.3cm (8in)
long (7).

decorated in relief with mountainous river
landscape scenes amongst swirling, misty
clouds; and two pewter mounted boxes of
square and circular form, decorated with
bamboo, pine and mon on nashiji grounds.
