A PAIR OF GOLD, SILVER AND COPPER DAMASCENED IRON

Tibet, 18th century
Each flattened circular vessel raised on a tall, square foot and with
a small neck and cover, flanked with a makara-form handle and tall
spout issuing from another makara head, each side decorated with
floral meanders with Buddhist Emblems and dragon roundels. Each:
36.5cm (14 1/4in) high (4).

Provenance
The Oliver Robert Coales Collection, according to his written records
acquired by Mr Coales when visiting Chamdo, Eastern Tibet, in
January 1917, and thence by descent.
A third beer ewer was donated by Mrs. Coales to the Victoria and
Albert Museum in 1928, accession number IM.22-1928. A beer, or
‘Chang’, jug of the same design was offered by our San Francisco
Saleroom, Fine Asian Art, 26 Jun 2018, lot 24.
