Pror. Dr. Haji Abdul Malik Karim
Amrullah, (1908-1981) or better
known by his acronym and pen name
HAMKA, was an Indonesian esteemed
Islamic scholar, philosopher, lecturer,
politician, journalist, and writer. Born in
West Sumatra, he was raised in a family
of devout Muslims. During his time
as a journalist for now discontinued
Pedoman Masyarakat, he wrote
several novels and Islamic philosophy
books. Later on, HAMKA was active in
Masyumi Party and jailed for two years
under President Sukarno’s rule. In his
life, he was known to have written over
100 books, ranging from philosophy,
politics, Minangkabau adat, history
and biography, Islamic doctrine, ethics,
mysticism, tafsir and fiction.
