spirituality, is a place after HAMKA’s
heart. His travel in Egypt is fuelled by
his wishes to see with his own eyes,
the place oft described in his reads.
There, he reflects on the remnants
of ancient civilization, the evergreen
cultures embedded in the hearts
of its people and met scholars and
wordsmiths that shaped the literary
and political scene of Egypt as it was.
In this valley ridden with history,
HAMKA penned Through the Valleys
of the Nile, keenly observing, and
absorbing little details that once made
Egypt the paragon of civilization.

The repeated assertions in the Qur’an
on declaring the devil as a malevolent,
hostile element carry a great and
important meaning to be studied. The
devil is men’s mortal enemy, and an
aversion to be hostile to them may
invite sin, for this is God’s command.
HAMKA, in this short essay, reminds
us of the importance of Tazkiyatun
Nafs or the purification of the heart
and soul in this worldly life, for the
devil will take any and all openings to
invade men’s hearts.

In this book, Prof. Dr. HAMKA summarised
his verdict on the functions and limitations
of the human mind in the reality of God.
HAMKA presents his ideas and provide
instances in elucidating the reality of
God and be appreciative of every luxury
conferred in this life. The wide discourse
of this book is in line with the evolution
of knowledge and information. Evolution
of knowledge as a product of thorough
scrutiny and human research should not
serve to further isolate oneself from Allah,
but to strengthen the Faith instead. This
book aims to benefit and supplement one’s
Islamic life while opening the mind and soul
to the belief that everything in this world
belongs to Allah.

In this book, HAMKA invites us to his time
and age. The conflict of the ummah, the
confusion bubbling up from many schools
of thought and the pressure to present
Islam to the community are felt in every
word. HAMKA explains the significance
of the Islamic State itself and follows up
with a detailed explanation of the policy
of Islamic governance. He takes the best
approach (wasatiyyah) in examining the
Islamic state by not only relying on the
classical texts alone, but instead issuing a
new ijtihad through an understanding of
the framework of democracy and politics
around it.
