1. Doctor Hello, Mr. Rose. Come in and sit down, please. Well, as I told you, your
kidneys don’t seem to be working as well as they should be. The tests
show that it is probably a condition called chronic glomerulonephritis,
which has damaged your kidneys. And that undoubtedly, you’ve had it for
a long time. Fortunately there are treatments to help. I think you are going
to need peritoneal dialysis.
2. Patient What’s that, doctor?
3. Doctor It means putting a tube into the abdomen and then washing fluid in and
out to keep the toxic substances in the blood down. There is no risk
attached to the treatment. I think you’d be much wiser to consider it.
With adults, we usually persist with peritoneal dialysis. It’s not
uncomfortable, and you’ll be taught how to do it yourself at home.
Also, I’m going to send you to a dietitian and she’ll give you advice on a
low protein diet. That will help lower the chemicals in your blood. I’m
also going to give you some tablets to help keep the bones healthy. This is
necessary for people with kidney disease.
