Advice can take the grammatical form of
a Yes/No question, taking rising intonation on the stressed syllable of the last
important word: Can you cut out the mid-morning coffee?
a Wh-question, taking falling intonation on the stressed syllable of the last
important word: Why don’t you try to exercise more?
a statement, taking falling intonation on the stressed syllable of the last important
word: You’re going to have to make some changes in your life.
1. Listen to the tape and mark the syllable where the intonation rises or
falls.
a. Do you think you could cut down on the amount you smoke?
b. You ought to eat a more balanced diet.
c. Why don’t you give a try?
2. Repeat the advice, paying particular attention to the rising or falling
intonation.
F. Role play
Student A will play the part of the doctor. Student B will play the part of the patient.
a. In groups: A students will prepare advice for the patients below; B students
will prepare questions to ask the doctor about their condition.
