Indirect questions take the falling intonation of statements.
We’re going to need to see where the blockage `is.
1. Listen to the tape and mark the syllable where the intonation falls.
a. We also need to see how serious the blockage is.
b. We’ll decide how best to move.
c. We’ll worry about that when the time comes.
2. Repeat the sentences, paying particular attention to the syllables
where the intonation falls.
F. Role play
Student A will play the part of the doctor; Student B will play the part of the patient’s
spouse.
i. In groups, Student A will prepare reassuring explanations to give the spouse;
Student B will prepare questions to ask the doctor about his/her spouse’s
condition.
ii. Cases:
- an unconscious stroke victim who is currently undergoing
diagnostic tests
- a patient whose appendix has burst
- a woman diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy
