C. Language Focus
First step
If the symptoms indicate that the baby does not have a serious disease, the doctor can
inform the parents by using these sentences:
1. quite common.
2. The symptoms are psychological.
3. not serious.
4. There’s nothing worry about.
5. be worried/concerned about.
Second step
If the symptoms indicate that the baby needs help, the doctor can tell the parents by using
these sentences:
1. difficulty in digesting
his/her food.
2. I’m afraid that your baby has some trouble in swallowing.
3. problem breathing.
4. she cannot blow her We must help her by
nose on her own. sucking the mucus out.
5. We’ll help him by changing the feeding regimen.
Third step
If the baby’s condition changes, the doctor can say this:
1. Your baby has had an improvement in her breathing.
2. is better now.
3. Your baby’s condition is stable now.
4. condition hasn’t changed.
5. I’m afraid that your baby’s condition is (a little) worse.
