1. Doctor: Well, Miss Jones, I’ve just examined your father. It’s a good thing you
brought him in when you did. We’re going to be able to help him.
2. Patient’s Is his condition serious? I mean, is he going to be all right?
daughter:
3. Doctor: He was complaining, as you know, of shortness of breath. We’re pretty
sure that this is due to a blockage in a blood vessel in his heart. We’re going
to need to insert a tube into this blood vessel and see where the blockage is
and how serious the blockage is. We are going to get ready for the
procedure right now.

4. Patient’s Oh, is it dangerous?
daughter:

5. Doctor: Well, there are slight risks involving any procedure. But I think there is a
much greater risk in doing nothing. Now, as I was saying, we will
investigate to see how extensive the blockage is first. Then, depending on
the results, we’ll decide how we should proceed.

6. Patient’s What will happen to him? Will he get better?
daughter:

7. Doctor: Yes, I hope so. You brought him in time. So I think we should be able to
help him. What happens next depends on the results about tests. If the
blockage is not too severe, we should be able to treat it with drugs and diet.
But if the blockage is severe, we may need to do an angioplasty or
ballooning of the blood vessel or, possibly, bypass surgery.
8. Patient’s Bypass?

9. Doctor: Yes, if we need to do that, we’ll take a blood vessel from his leg and use it
as a detour for the blockage around the heart. But we’ll worry about that
when the time comes. Now, we’re going to concentrate on assessing the
damage and the problem. Would you like to visit your farther before we
proceed?
