 Keynote Speakers
Dr. Yvonne Parnell
Dr. Yvonne Parnell is a Registered Clinical and Neuropsychologist and a trained Psychoanalyst. She is also a trained facilitator of Family Bridges: A Workshop for Troubled and Alienated Parent Child Relationships. She has pioneered Aftercare protocols for working with Alienating parents.
At the Family Violence Lost in the Fog Conference, Dr. Parnell will discuss working with alienating parents. Alienating parents frequently have serious psychiatric diagnoses, such as severe Narcissistic, Borderline, or Antisocial Personality Disorder, which interfere with their ability not only to meet the needs of their children but also to function in healthy ways in other relationships. As such, they pose significant challenges to the mental health professionals, lawyers, and judges who are involved in their cases.
In Canada Judges will protect children from the psychological abuse of their alienating parent by ordering a temporary suspension of custodial rights, a minimum of 90-day suspension of access, and a reunification program such as Family Bridges to reunite the children with the targeted (now custodial) parent. Courts will also give strong direction to the alienating parent about expected behavioural changes before the Courts will order a resumption of contact with the children. So it happens that in Canada we have had a unique opportunity to work at length with alienating parents. This work resulted in the development of the Aftercare Process that first and foremost protects the psychological gains made by the children in the Family Bridges Workshop and their healthy relationship with the Custodial parent, and secondly works with the alienating parent to make the behavioural changes required to resume access to the children. Drs Parnell and Rand will outline the historical development of this Aftercare Process and the foundational principles upon which it is developed, and present some preliminary outcome data.
