Boryspil is in the top five ranking of the largest airports in Central and Eastern Europe. Ukraine’s main airport, Boryspil, is playing an increasing role in the region with the open skies agreement with the European Union will open up even greater prospects for the transport hub. According to the organization Airports Council International Europe, Boryspil is ranked fourth in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of passenger traffic with a figure of about 6 million passengers in the first eight months of 2021. "During the eight months of this year, passenger traffic in Ukraine increased by two-thirds, with 90% of passengers flying abroad - mainly to Turkey, Egypt, and Greece. European carriers are extremely interested in transporting this category of Ukrainians to their favorite vacation spots”.
● Trains
Ukraine’s exports of railway products amounted to 13.0 kt in September, 7% less m/m and 16% below the average 2020 level, according to Concorde Capital’s analysis of State customs service’s goods exports data. Exports amounted to 13.4 kt per month in 9M21 (120.2 kt for the period), 14% less than the 2020 average of 15.6 kt per month. Exports to Russia amounted to 0.4 kt in September, 36% more m/m but 91% less than the 2020 average of 5.0 kt per month. Exports to Belarus amounted to 4.8 kt in September, 15% less m/m but 59% higher than the 2020 average of 3.0 kt per month. The average export price for the railway products added 4% m/m in September to $1,477/t. Ukraine’s largest railway wheel producer is Interpipe (INTHOL), which in 2020 exported 165 kt of railway products (13.8 kt per month). Recall, Russia banned imports of railway products from Ukraine from early February.
● Ships
With the bumper grain crop moving to Black Sea ships, Ukraine’s ports are climbing out of their slump, reports the Sea Ports Authority. For the first nine months of this year, cargo was down 10.7% yoy. The year started with a 20.4% drop in the first quarter. This improved to a 16.5% drop in the first half. Through the end of September, Ukraine’s 13 ports handled 106 million tons of cargo. Exports accounted for 77% of this volume.
Four small ports bucked the national trend and registered growth: Olbia +6.4% yoy to 3.2 million tons; Izmail +21.3% to 2.9 million tons; Reni +34% to 810,33 tons; and Ust-Dunaisk +116% to 38,800 tons. Two big ports almost reached last year’s levels: Chornomorsk -2% to 17.1 million tons and Mariupol -2.6% to 5.2 million tons.
EBRD and IFC to invest in the modernization of the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk. Both financial institutions are supporting the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority in structuring and tendering a public-private partnership (PPP) to modernize the port by preparing a comprehensive contractual framework; setting bidding criteria and tender rules; will liaise with potential investors, and pave the way for a successful tender. “Working with investors is the focus of our port development activities”, said the press release of EBRD.
