PHLEBOTOMY SUPPLIES
The basic step in performing venipuncture is to have the necessary supplies and/or
equipment organized for proper collection of specimens. The evacuated tube system
is the most popular system used because of its ease when drawing more than one
sample.
Always stock your tray at the beginning of your shift
THE EVACUATED TUBE SYSTEM
A. Evacuated tubes:
Color-coded for specific tests and available in adult and pediatric sizes.
B. Double-headed needles:
Known as a straight needle. These are disposable and are used only once both for
single-tube draw and multi-draw (more than one tube).
Needle size:
Blood banking: 16gauge - 18gauge
Routine Venipuncture: 21gauge - 25gauge
The gauge of the needle determines the width of the lumen, the lumen is the opening
of the needle. Also known as the bore.
The curve of the needle is called the bevel should, the bevel should always face
upward.
The larger the number on the gauge, the smaller the lumen of the needle.
Using a needle that is too small will cause hemolysis (destruction of blood).
