3. D-Day - June 6, 1944
More than 5,000 ships landing Allied troops on a heavily
defensive 50-mile stretch of Normandy's coastline were
involved in the largest amphibious operation in history, while
thousands more participated in an airborne assault. A major
deception operation fooled the Germans into thinking the
landings were a feint, and there was light resistance at four of
five landing sites. On the fifth, Omaha Beach, U.S. forces came
under heavy fire and 2,000 died as they fought to break out of
the beachhead.
