Lent is a religious observance that begins on Ash Wednesday and
ends approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday. Its
purpose is to prepare the believer for Easter through prayer,
penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving and self-denial. During
Lent, many Christians commit to fasting, as well as giving up
certain luxuries in order to replicate the sacrifice of Jesus’s
journey into the desert for 40 days. Many Christians also add a
spiritual discipline, such as reading a daily devotional and/or
praying.
I typically give up something such as eating sweets or some other
food that I like. In recent years, I have begun reading devotionals
and praying in addition to giving something up (self- sacrifice).
The Upper Room is a great resource for devotions. I hope that
during the time of Lent, you consider adding devotion/prayer to
your daily fasting.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for sending Your Son to teach
Your word and to sacrifice His life to atone for our sins. Please
help me during the time of Lent to study the Bible and learn more
about the life and sacrifice of Jesus. I humbly accept Your grace
and ask that You help me extend grace to all that I come in
contact with. In Jesus’s name I pray. AMEN
