P. 46

When I sang with John Denver, many people said I was as talented as

he was. Yet he went on to be a big music star, and I became an
attorney. I’m not unhappy about it now, although I admit I was a little

disgruntled about it at the time. But what I hear about big time music,
I wouldn’t want to have anything to do with it.

But this doesn’t really matter. We’re not meant to compete against
each other. We just need to compete against ourselves. The Bible says

if we compare ourselves to others we’re not wise. This doesn’t mean
not to COMPETE, but just don’t COMPARE.

And it’s a lot like not judging others.
Jesus says, “Don’t judge or you will be judged.”

How can you appreciate others and judge them?
                                                 The fact is you can’t.

One thing I love about the gospel is that it is ‘the great equalizer.’
Religion creates all types of differences and distinctions between folks.

But the gospel is just the opposite. Paul says we are all equal with each
other, no matter what our status or condition of life. There are no

differences between us in the gospel based on sex, race, color, age,
education, position, title, wealth, or anything else.

We are all so different in everything in life, and we know that we are all
so different. We know we’re not the same sex, race, color, age, title,

wealth, education, position, or anything else. But if we live the gospel,
we should accept and relate to others as equals. The truth is we are all

on an equal playing field at the foot of the cross of Jesus.

Comparing ourselves with others, and especially judgment others is a

fruitless endeavor. All judging does is it creates division. The gospel is
               what produces unity between people.

Should I compare myself to John Denver? I read he said that he wanted
to be an attorney, at least earlier in his life.
