The Answer Key offers possible answers to the Summative Assessment questions. Students’ answers
will vary. Remember to accept any answer that the student can justify from the text.
Answers might include:

2. One of her brothers, Vincent, received a second-hand chess set as a Christmas present and the three children
began to play with it.
3. The title of the story has two meanings. Firstly, the story is about the game of chess and its rules. The word
game is also a metaphor for life and how to live it well, by learning good rules for living, as we have to do to play
a game well.

Jong, responded differently at the climax of the story because of their different life experiences.

5. We can see all of these characters in Waverly. For example, she is obviously very bright and has a good
memory. We see that not only in her chess playing but also in the detailed way in which she describes her
neighborhood. In other words, looking at these chess champion characteristics helps me understand what is
special about this little girl and how she can cope with her very strong-willed mother.
