proper pronunciation, with special attention focused on
intonation.
By developing students’ sensitivity to intonation, they
become more readily acquainted with the functions of
intonation, i.e., they recognize questions, statements or
commands based on the intonation used. Because teachers make
a deliberate effort to correct errors early in the learning stages,
speech errors are corrected before they become persistent or
fossilized.
Additionally, drills familiarize students with situational
conversations in the target language; thus, enabling them to
enter dialogues with a truer sense of how native speakers
interact verbally. One final advantage is the emphasis placed on
the cultural background of the speakers who use the
second language. In understanding the culture that shapes
language, students can become acquainted with the different
nuances of meaning, especially since language and culture have
profound effects on each other.
