Tube and Drain Care
Nasogastric (NG Tubes) & Orogastric Tubes (OG Tubes)
NG/OG tubes are inserted through the nose in to the stomach.
Purposes of the tube:
Drainage
Decompression
Feeding
Medication Administration
Speed up return of bowel function
Types of NG / OG tubes
Levin Tube: Single lumen, has holes near tip Salem Sump: Double lumen, radiopaque allowing it to be
visible on x-ray
NG / OG Tubes are frequently used for tube feedings or enteral feedings.
Tube Feeding / Enteral Feeding Patient Care
Head of bed should remain elevated 30 - 45 at all times unless medically
contraindicated
Suction should be at the bedside at all times
Patient may be placed on “Aspiration Precautions”
