Tube and Drain Care


               Nasogastric (NG Tubes) & Orogastric Tubes (OG Tubes)

               NG/OG tubes are inserted through the nose in to the stomach.

               Purposes of the tube:
                       Drainage
                       Decompression
                       Feeding
                       Medication Administration
                       Speed up return of bowel function




               Types of NG / OG tubes


            Levin Tube: Single lumen, has holes near tip        Salem Sump: Double lumen, radiopaque allowing it to be
                                                                visible on x-ray






















               NG / OG Tubes are frequently used for tube feedings or enteral feedings.

               Tube Feeding / Enteral Feeding Patient Care
                     Head of bed should remain elevated 30 - 45 at all times unless medically
                                                               
                                                                    
                       contraindicated
                     Suction should be at the bedside at all times
                     Patient may be placed on “Aspiration Precautions”
