I am recently returned from an expedition up the Congo on board a Belgian steamer
captained by a Joseph Conrad.
We were on a mission to capture a mysterious figure that we believe is passing himself
off as a deity and recruiting native africans in order to cause mischief in the region.
I recount a peculiar incident that occurred whilst we were moored up replenishing supplies.
It was dusk, we heard two sharp whistles from the trees then from out of nowhere,
the forest came to life with hundreds of primates throwing branches and fruits down
on us. Fearing for our lives, we were forced back onto our ship.
In the mêlée, I could have sworn that I caught a glimpse of Prof. Livingarty - he was
bedecked in gold and gemstones blowing a whistle to command the beasts.
I keep this observation to myself for I fear the others may think me mad if I voice my
suspicions that someone is training a monkey army.
I hear later that a character matching Livingarty’s description staggered out of the
forests with a horde of wealth, extremely dehydrated and gibbering that he was the
king of the swingers.
