I entered into a wager today with Edward Bagnall Poulton and a young Albert Stewart
Meek to see who could bag the largest butterfly.
We set off in different directions in search of the fabled bird sized insects.
Meek insisted on shooting the poor beasts out of the air with his gun to much hilarity.
With his specimens in tatters he was disqualified promptly. I was fortunate enough to
have a colossal white specimen land on my lapel while hiding in a patch of flowers.
However, due to the sudden bout of hay fever I was experiencing, I mistook it for my
kerchief and sneezed it’s wings off.
Edward won the day with an epic swallowtail Butterfly - we later nicknamed it the
flying handkerchief after one too many sherries.
Poor old meek was fuming at his disqualification and promptly set off for Papua new
Guinea vowing to shoot the biggest butterfly in the world out of the air and steal back
his glory!
