Study Section 7: Jesus is God - continued
7.1 Connect.
When the JW comes to your door, and you tell him all you want to talk about is Jesus, he has
some verses memorized in his bag of tricks. You need to know what these verses will be and
have a good rebuttal. The JW has been duped to believe false information about these
verses. On the surface, his arguments may sound plausible, but with your knowledge of a few
Greek words, you will have opportunity to show him the TRUTH. Jesus is the truth who can
set him free from the bondage of the Watchtower Tract and Bible Society.
7.2 Objectives:
1. The student should be able to cite six verses that are often quoted by a JW to “prove” that
Jesus is a created being. Your goal today is to learn what these verses really are saying about the
person of Jesus.
2. The student should be able to explain that one must learn what these six verses say about
Jesus, but you must memorize some Greek words so that you can share them as you witness. You must
know them by heart!
Again, pay attention to the Witnessing Notes, as they are invaluable in bringing the JW into conflicting
ideas between the Watchtower Society and the truth of Scripture. If you create a loss of trust, perhaps
the JW can be freed from bondage to the Society.
7.3 More verses to prove that Jesus is God…
6. John 8:58
58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM." (Greek = ego
eimi)
NWT: Jesus said to them: Most truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into existence, I have
been.
“I have been” means Jesus was preexisting before Abraham (reference to his age), but I AM means Jesus
was eternally preexistent (God) (reference to his identity). Big difference!
The word “Yahweh” occurs some 5,300 times in the OT and is connected with the
verb, “to be.” Ex. 3:14, God’s name is “I AM WHO I AM.” The I AM in verse 14 and
the name for “Yahweh” in verse 15 are both derivatives of the same verb, “to be.”
I AM (ego eimi) is God’s name in that the name expresses the full nature of God’s
eternal nature. I AM and Yahweh have the same root meaning and can be
considered interchangeable. Both mean “eternal self-existence.”
