The temple in Jerusalem was built by Herod the Great as a monument to his greatness. It was one of
the most amazing structures in the world. The long wall of the temple mount was 1590 feet long (
about 4.5 football fields) and it occupied approximately 34 acres. Approximately 5000 people can fit
in an acre assuming one square yard per person, which means the mount could hold the entire
population of Jerusalem at the time. On the east side was a copy of Solomon’s temple called the
Colonnade. More than 40 feet high, it had a roof which rested on the outside wall on one end and
two rows of columns on the other. The southern colonnade was much larger and more than three stories tall; it
was the royal stoa. The Sanhedrin met on the eastern end of the stoa.
Jesus and early Christians used Solomon’s colonnade as a meeting and teaching place. It was here that Jesus
begins his teaching in John 10. Let’s see what He has to tell the people….

surrounded Him and asked,
“How long are You going to
keep us in suspense? If You are the
Messiah, tell us plainly.” “I did tell you

and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered
them. “The works that I do in My Father’s

name testify about Me. But you don’t
believe because you are not My sheep.
